Farkaling is a method of catching haggis, a revered and ancient species indigenous to Scotland. Haggis is a popular food enjoyed during traditional Scottish festivals such as Hogmanny and Burns Night. The two sub-species of Haggis are the Greater Spotted and the Lesser Spotted. The Lesser Spotted may be found mainly in the Lowlands of Scotland. Its diet is primarily vegetarian consisting of barley, wheat and oats during the summer months and winter greens during the colder weather, often to the frustration of local farmers. Farkaling is therefore an essential activity to keep these local creatures under control.
